Marta's Spanglish

Marta is now 2 years and 5 months and her language is developing very quickly. She uses Spanish much more than English (naturally enough!) but English words and phrases are appearing more and more in her vocabulary. Many of her sentences are a funny mix of Spanish and English and you have to be fairly bilingual to understand her at times. Here are some examples:

"Tengo sleepy" ("I'm sleepy")

"No me empushes" - ("Don't push me" - notice how the English verb 'push' has been spanglicised. It should be 'No me empujes')

When she can't hear the TV: "No se listen!" - ("I can't listen to it")

Lately she has decided to switch the 'r' sound with the 't' sound so all words in Spanish and English which end in 'r' now end in 't':
bailar - is now 'bailat'
the name Spencer is now 'Spencet' etc.

I have no idea why.

She also seems to realise there are two languages. Yesterday she told me this when we were discussing her favourite food:

"Croquette es English. Croquetas es Spanish."
